Reid Month Three

Reid has a surprisingly expressive little face. I remember thinking about the overall fear I had about having this little man who couldn't tell me anything, couldn't say, "dad, my foot hurts" or whatever. He was, in this moment of dread before he actually arrived, a little mute. As these photos demonstrate, that couldn't be further from the truth. Sure, he still doesn't say, "why don't you take my onesie off and snap some pictures, weirdo," but he does communicate a lot (mostly "pick me up" and "what was that sound?").

The leading colors in the baby universe appear to be blue and orange. I don't know why this is, and Reid is having trouble figuring it out himself. In the first picture above, Reid is sitting in the little vibrating rocking chair we sometimes place him in while we eat (no highchair yet). It is blue with inexplicable zebra trim, as you can see here. Another oddly blue and orange item in our home is Reid's butterfly, which is actually an ingenious little floor-based play-yard which allows him to swat at items suspended over him while safely ensconced on the butterfly's belly. We are (not seriously) concerned that Reid will be a scrapper, because he insists on threatening me with his fists whenever I photograph him in private moments. (Note the punch-out stances in the photos above right and below right.) When Reid sits in almost any non-prostrate position he eventually hunkers into a sort of side-long hunch, like the Dude in the "The Big Lebowski." As you can see again from this first picture, he works himself down into this position quite readily, and then stares at you, like a big league catcher. In the center picture below, Reid shows off some fly Fila-wear with his Uncle Steve. There's a cowboy hat in the background.

Some more interesting Reid faces, and some family love. Above left is Reid with his Aunt Alia and soon-to-be Uncle Sean. In the center above is Reid with his new second cousin (or something) Giavanna. Gia was born in the first week of August, a month after Reid. Her eyes are really that big, and despite appearances, Reid is not drunk on fortified wine in this photograph. If gave you a dollar for all the bizarre photos I have of these two essentially spineless creatures crashing into each other in that corner of my mother's art-deco couch, I'd make you buy me a nice dinner. This one is both the most amusing and the most adorable. I like to think that Reid is doing an impression of Christopher Lloyd as Reverend Jim Ignatowski from "Taxi." In the next picture Gia and Reid are joined by Gia's older brother Anthony, who, though a small guy looms over these two infants like Andre the Giant. He feels tall for the first time in his life. Gia is not wearing a sock on her right foot and Reid has begun (again) to think about his mother's milk.
